AT&T Launches TerreStar Genus Cellular/Satellite Phone

Thursday, October 1, 2009

This is not the first time we’re showing you this cool hybrid phone capable of handling both cellular and satellite connectivity. We knew the TerreStar Genus was coming and it looks like AT&T is the chosen carrier. The phone has some interesting features like a 2.6-inch touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. In terms of connectivity the TereStar Genus can handle GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual 3G connectivity (UMTS/HSDPA) but also Terrestar’s 2.2GHz satellite connectivity. That means you’ll be able to make the switch to satellite whenever AT&T lets you down, and apparently that could happen in 30% of cases. In order for everything to work properly you’ll need to be prepared to get two different plans and not be surprised to see roaming charges add up. That’s right, when you’re going on satellite mode, you’ll be paying roaming charges! The phone will be available at the beginning of 2010 so there’s plenty of time to assess your need for a satellite phone in your life!
